Last week of genius hour! This project has been a very interesting one. I was able to learn about myself and how much I procrastinate. I am disappointed in myself for not putting in as much effort as I would have liked, but this week I was able to add more onto the project. Grinchical does not have ten songs, but I definitely learned how difficult the musical writing process can be. Not only is it hard to write a musical but telling a story in general has proven to be a challenge. This may have not taken the exact direction I was expecting in the beginning, but overall I would call this project a success because of what I was able to learn.

I really can't believe it's already week eleven. This project has gone by so fast! As of right now I don't have ten songs, but hopefully I will be able to get there before the end of the project. I have been spending my time studying for the AP world exam, coaching a softball team, and doing homework. I've been aware the work has been piling up for a while now but my procrastination has really gotten the best of me. Writers block has also been an issue throughout this project. I want to do the musical justice, but I fear it won't live up to the picture I've created in my head. I am going to continue to work as genius hour is beginning to wrap up, and hopefully create something I am proud of.
Genius hour is coming to an end! I can't believe it is already week ten. I haven't done the best job keeping up with my goal of a song per week. I think if I sit down one day, and really focus then I will be able to get closer towards meeting that goal. I am just going to have to put more time and effort into this project than I realized. I want Grinchical to turn out well, and in order for it to be the best it can be then I am going to put forth greater effort. This week will really be a turning point and hopefully in week eleven I will be able to report positively on the progress being made.
Today is Easter Sunday. We had a long break which allowed me time to work on my Genius Hour project. I have been neglecting Grinchical because of other homework. I have also been helping coach a little league team which has taken up a lot of time throughout the week. I didn't know I was going to be volunteering at the beginning of the twelve weeks. It has really been a time consuming commitment but I have enjoyed it. I wasn't able to finish my song this week even though I have had more time to work on Grinchical. I'm planning on caching up next week and hopefully I will be more productive.
This marks week seven of Genius Hour and I have to say it was pretty difficult. It wasn't so much that I was struggling with writing my song it was more of me procrastinating. I wasn't at school on the day Mr. Barker let us work on our projects during class. That period is when I get most of my work done so not being able to use that slighlty pushed me back. Another thing that distracted me was an assignment we were told about this week. I've spent the past few days working on my memior which is now up to twelve pages. I am also coaching a little league team so recently I'm finding it hard to balance school and extra curriculars. During week eight I am really going to try to make more of an effort to get work done.
This week was during spring break which was very needed! This time was perfect for getting extra work done. I didn't utilize as much of the time to work on as I should've but I am slightly ahead of pace. The trouble I'm having now is pacing the story correctly. I struggled with this at first but now as I am progressing with the story it is becoming more difficult. I just want to make sure that the musical is timed appropriately. Timing proves to be challenging because in order to gain perspective I have to imagine how long this whole process would take in real time on a stage. Especially since I am trying to make connections with the story circle. I know I can't follow it to a tee but over the course of writing this I hope for it to be pretty close. This won't automatically insure my musical is well liked but it gives me more confidence when showing what I've created to other people.
Week five of Genius Hour! It is crazy to believe five weeks of Genius Hour have already come and gone. It seems like just yesterday I was starting this whole process. Thankfully this week is also the beginning of spring break. This will allow for some catch up time for me. Between homework, practice, and family time writing songs has been difficult. I am very appreciative that Mr. Barker provides an hour each week for us to work on our projects. Because of this, I am able to get ahead every Wednesday. Time management is something I hadn't realized was going to play such a big role in this project. Giving myself the time to work on Grinchical with no distractions was hard to accomplish this past week. But as I previously mentioned, spring break will be a nice time to relax while also being able to focus on my work. I am looking forward to accomplishing as much as possible during this time frame.
This is week four of my genius hour project. I am really enjoying this project so far! I was originally going to have dialogue separate from the actual songs but now I am just going to have them sing those parts of the script. This will make things easier and hopefully things will flow more easily. But if it doesn't work out, then I will revert back to having spoken conversation verses a song. This week I finally took my notes and papers with song lyrics and put them into a google doc I had previously made. I feel more comfortable writing on paper so when creating a song I have traditionally done it on there instead of typing it on a computer. My train of thought works better when I have a pencil to pen connection but I may try something different considering that is what genius hour is all about.
This week I struggled writing my third song. I had trouble finding a good place to start. But eventually was able to sucessfully write a song. I had to draw inspiration from the internet as how to write my song. At the beginning of the project I thought I would just sit down and be able to write the script and lyrics very quickly. I know realize how much thought and effort comes with writing a musical. It is a lot of work! Right now I am really working on progressing my characters, particularly Cindy as the story goes on. I have decided she is going to be my protagonist throughout this musical. Although the story isn't going to be centered around the Grinch he is still going to play a key role in the story. I am going to include Max as a character but I do not want the story to be similar to the original "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" book and movie. This way I can create something different and original.
